When we built our custom home 5 years ago, I had a list of must haves that I knew I wanted to include. These were things that would make the biggest impact and we’d get the most use out of. I’m still happy with the decision to this day, so for us, these upgrades were money well spent.
Upgrades can add up very quickly when building a home, so it’s always best to prioritize where you want your money to be spent. Here are 4 must-haves we included in our new build that I don’t regret.
4 MUST HAVES TO INCLUDE IN A NEW BUILD
Resilient Flooring
We decided to go with wood-look tile all throughout our house. Not having any carpet was a huge priority for us, along with a flooring option that is essentially scratch proof and water proof, especially since we have dogs. I’m a huge fan of Beautifully Responsible® Resilient Flooring for this reason! Our floors take a beating between the dogs, a baby, and all of life’s other unexpected moments, but they still look as good as new! We all have our routines and schedules, yet every day, we must adapt to the unexpected. If there’s only one area to splurge on in your home, let it be on resilient flooring! This is a great resource to learn more about resilient flooring options made by Beautifully Responsible® manufacturers and for finding sustainable, beautiful, and high-performance flooring options at your local flooring stores. These options are constructed for long-term durability and crafted to promote healthy, beautiful environments inside and out.
Adjustable Closet Built-Ins
Close built-ins are an investment in themselves, so when you’re already spending that kind of money on a closet system, it may be a good idea to make sure the entire system is adjustable and versatile. In my home, rather than having shelves fixed a certain height, we can move ours around any way we’d like to adjust to changing needs. A lot of times you don’t know how you want to utilize your space until you’re living in it, and having adjustable built-ins are the ultimate way to prevent any future remorse!
Custom Cabinetry
The kitchen is the heart of the home and one of the most fun spaces to customize! Some of the customizations I made were adding a built in pull out spice rack, large pot drawers, a built in trash cabinet, a pull out cabinet for storage bags, foil, and other paper products, as well as built in backing sheet compartments. This made for a very functional use of space and makes storage and organization so convenient. If given the option, I highly recommend anyone building to add these custom touches to their kitchen!
Extra Outlets
Plugs, plugs, and more plugs! You can’t ever go wrong with having extra outlets! I personally like to add extra outlets inside closets for steaming clothes and charging or powering devices and inside or under cabinetry for a more seamless look! It’s a good idea to think ahead for how you’ll be living in your space. While you may not necessarily need to plug anything into a tiny nook space, having that extra outlet there may come in handy at night when it’s dark in the house and you’re able to plug in a nightlight for convenience!
