I’ve had female dogs all my life, but one thing I’ve never had to deal with was a heat cycle, that is until I got Charley!
For various reasons, you may decide to spay your dog either before or after their first heat cycle.
Many people have the surgery done prior to their dog ever going into heat, however, this should be a decision discussed with your vet to determine what’s best for your pet.
For us, it was best to let Charley go through her first heat cycle, and then spay, so that’s what we did!
To be completely honest, I was so stressed leading up to Charley’s heat cycle. I didn’t know what to expect and feared I was about to get into more than what I could handle!
I had anxiety over the fact that Charley wasn’t going to cooperate with wearing her diapers and we’d have a huge mess on our hands! Thankfully, it was all just anxiety on my part and the process ended up going better than I could’ve imagined without any issues. In fact, it was actually quite easy.
If you have a female puppy and you’re anticipating going through the heat cycle, I’m here to tell you it’s nothing to worry about! With the proper precautions, you’ll be more than ready to take it on!
Tips for Caring for Your Female Dog During Heat
First things first, as I mentioned above, consult with your vet to determine the best timeframe to spay your pet, whether that be before or after heat.
If you decide to go through a heat cycle with your dog, preparation is key! You’ll need to make sure you have everything you’ll need for not only the heat cycle, but also after a spay surgery.
The most important thing you’ll need for caring for your female dog during heat is disposable diapers, preferably something leak free such as Hartz® Dog Diapers, which are available now on Amazon.
Hartz® Dog Diapers are a great option that comes in two stylish and fun prints. They’re highly absorbent thanks to the patented FlashDry® Gel technology, which comes in handy for dogs in heat since it provides 6 hours of leak-proof protection.
You can also have peace of mind with your dog being on your furniture during their heat cycle!
It was helpful for us to introduce diapers to Charley before she started her heat cycle, that way she could get used to wearing them and we could work out any issues ahead of time!
I think doing this made a huge difference! She never tried to pull the diapers off, which was my biggest fear, and I think it’s because she had enough time to get used to them!
I’m so glad we successfully got through the heat cycle with Charley! A little practice and patience goes a long way!
If your female dog will be going into heat soon, I hope this post has helped alleviate any fear you may have!

Our year old lab went through her first heat cycle in December, as recommended by the vet. I wish I would have known about these ahead of time!

I do agree it is best to consult with your vet. I honestly never thought of using doggie diapers . These are great tips for first time dog owners as when I was younger and had my first pet I had no idea how to properly manage when they were in heat .
