Lake Tahoe has been on my bucket list for many years, so imagine my excitement when I finally got to check that destination off the list! Many of y’all had followed along on Instagram during my recent trip to Lake Tahoe and I can’t wait to tell you all about it! I got tons of questions about the gorgeous Vacasa lake home we stayed in, so today’s post is all about that!
The Best Time to Visit Lake Tahoe
There’s never a wrong time to visit Lake Tahoe – it just depends on what you want to do! Visiting Lake Tahoe in the fall is the best time to go, in my option!
In the summer the lake is very much alive, with tons of boats and water sports to enjoy. In the winter, the town completely transforms to a winter wonderland, with the ski resorts in full swing.
We decided to visit Lake Tahoe in the fall, which is considered shoulder season, when the beach goers and boaters have officially packed up and left and the ski resorts are gearing up to open for the season.
To be honest, I think shoulder season in Lake Tahoe is the best time to visit!
We got to see the beautiful fall foliage, the weather was amazing (warm to cool days and chilly nights), and we got to enjoy all the beautiful beaches and trails without the summertime crowds. Some days were still warm enough to go kayaking or lay out on the beach. It was perfect!
Why We Chose South Lake Tahoe
When planning a trip to Lake Tahoe, one of the first things to decide on is where you want to stay: North Lake Tahoe or South Lake Tahoe.
We chose South Lake Tahoe, although we couldn’t have gone wrong with either!
To sum it up quickly, North Lake Tahoe is more untouched and South Lake Tahoe is more commercialized.
South Lake Tahoe has tons of restaurants and even a few casinos for nightlife, so we decided to go this route since we love to spend our evenings trying different restaurants while on vacation.
Where to Stay in South Lake Tahoe
We stayed in a Vacasa in South Lake Tahoe called The Dream House, and the house itself and location couldn’t have been more perfect!
The house has direct boat/water access to Lake Tahoe with stunning backyard views, which instantly won me over. It’s centrally located in South Lake Tahoe, just a close drive to many restaurants and attractions, so this was also a plus.
If you’re planning a trip to Lake Tahoe to spend majority of your time on the lake, I highly recommend checking out Vacasa to find a rental like this that has direct water access!
Why Vacasa & The Dream House
So, about the house that many of you saw on my Instagram stories and loved! The Dream House caught my eye for many of it’s amazing features!
As mentioned, the location in South Lake Tahoe was perfect, and I loved that it had direct water access in the back yard!
We wanted a place that truly felt like home and this was it!
Rooms for relaxing and entertaining were a must, and this Vacasa checked all the boxes with a large kitchen, outdoor hot tub, and pool table!
Most importantly, a full kitchen was a must for us since we love to cook and had planned to do a full holiday meal while there.
The Dream House has a huge fully stocked kitchen which is perfect for hosting a large family for a holiday gathering, which was definitely a selling point!
We made a complete holiday meal spread and did it so easily with the large kitchen and family sized dining table in this home. This holiday trip will go down as one of the most memorable for me, and I highly recommend everyone to plan at least one family holiday trip away if you haven’t already!
The thought of hosting a holiday gathering away from home may seem stressful, but Vacasa makes it so easy as you can search and filter specific features and amenities to accommodate your needs. The property listings are specifically created to help you find exactly what you’re looking for and ensure you know exactly what you’ll get.
Vacasa is North America’s largest vacation rental management platform with over 23,000 vacation rentals across the U.S. and international countries, so you can count on them to be the most trusted to make your holiday season less stressful and more fun.
If you’re thinking of planning a trip to Lake Tahoe, definitely put this place on your list. I recommend booking early though, because reservations fill up quickly here!

13 years ago, my sister got to honeymoon in Lake Tahoe. She went in October, and from what I could tell of the photos, it was spectacularly beautiful. I already wanted to go after she did, but now I want to go even more after reading your post! It sounds like a wonderful place to be – especially in the autumn.
