This post on how to keep your white home clean with pets is sponsored by the Libman Company. All opinions are my own.
Call me crazy, but I have a white house with 3 dogs – one still being a puppy! I know you’re probably thinking who in their right mind would ever do such a thing, but before you go any further, let me assure you that it’s possible to have a white house, multiple dogs, and still keep things clean. It’s actually a lot easier than it may seem, and in my opinion, easier to keep clean compared to other colors. I’ll explain!
My dogs have full access to our white sofa and beds with white duvets and they still look as good as new. The secret to this is having washable furniture and fabrics and keeping the dogs clean! If you are looking for tips on how to keep your (white – or not!) home clean with pets, then look no further! I’ll explain everything in more detail below on how I keep my white home clean with pets and what works best for us! If you’ve been wanting that dreamy white sofa or bed, but have been too afraid your pets would ruin it, I say don’t worry and just go for it! I did and don’t regret it one bit!
HOW TO KEEP YOUR (WHITE) HOME CLEAN WITH PETS
Invest in Washable & Slipcovered Furniture
I have this thing for white, and anyone that has been to my home knows this all too well! Everything is white! The kitchen, the sofa, the duvets, the towels, the sheets, and even some furniture! So, how is this doable with dogs – 3 of them at that!? The trick is slipcovered furniture and washable/removable fabrics. We have a bleach white slipcovered sofa that the dogs are allowed on, but it’s so easy because you can literally take off the cover and throw it in the wash and it’s good as new! The same goes for the duvet cover. It’s white and can be removed and washed! I find this much easier than having a traditional comforter – it’s much less bulky and easier to wash.
In my opinion, I think white is easier to keep clean than many other colors because you can bleach it! So, whether you’re a fan of white or not, you can’t go wrong with slipcovers and duvet covers! Leather furniture is a good option too, but keep in mind you run the risk of scratches and tears from sharp claws.
Keep Paws Clean
Always wash paws before your pet comes inside! The easiest way to do this is to keep pet-safe wipes or a towel by the door and wash their paws before you let them in. This will help reduce the amount of mud that gets tracked in, and is also necessary for preventing dirt stains if your pet likes to lay on furniture!
Keep Cleaning Supplies on Hand
My go-to cleaning tools are the Wonder Mop and a cordless hand vac. Hand vacs are my favorite since they’re cordless and you can easily vacuum up dirt and grass your dogs may track inside. You can’t the freedom of small cordless appliances for quick cleanups!
The Wonder Mop is my other favorite tool for getting past surface debris and giving floors a deeper clean! It works on all surfaces and is made of machine-washable wide microfiber grips that lift up to 20% more dirt than other mops. It has a built-in p
Groom Regularly
Keeping hair on your dog’s feet short will help reduce the amount of dirt, mud, and wet grass they track in. I like to think of fluffy paws as socks – you wouldn’t walk outside in the wet grass with socks on, so don’t let your dogs! Regular grooming and brushing reduces shedding, which means less vacuuming for you!
Designate a Spot for Pets
Giving your dog a bed or designated spot to lay on will help reduce the amount of shedding and dirt buildup that can occur. If keeping your pets off of furniture is not an option and your dog likes to sit on the sofa or sleep in the bed with you, train them to lay in the same spot every day. You can even put a small blanket down for them to lay on which will help keep the area cleaner.
Opt for Hard Floors Over Carpet
Carpet is not my friend! It stains, it smells, and it’s a recipe for allergens. Some love it, but it’s just not for me. I’m a hard floors kind of girl, and in my opinion, this is your best bet if you have pets. Unlike with carpet, you don’t have to worry about soiling and unsanitary conditions if your pet has an accident inside, or simply just tracks in mud from the yard. Hard floor surfaces are much more durable and easier to clean and disinfect.
When we built, we had wood tile laid throughout the entire house and I couldn’t be happier. Considering we just went through the puppy potty training stage with Charley, this decision was well worth the extra money. Had we not done this, we would have already been replacing all the carpet in a brand new home. Not cool! Our wood tile looks like real hardwood, but in my opinion is better because it’s more durable – you don’t have to worry about it scratching or warping from water stains!

Our next house will definitely have hardwoods instead of carpet! We have 2 pups and a white comforter and it is so hard to keep clean because we love our snuggles!!

I agree with the hardwood floors being a must! I made the mistake of white furniture that did NOT have slipcovers or was washable. I can see how white slipcovers would be a great idea because you can just bleach it.

These are great tips! Definitely prefer hardwood floors, so much easier! However, I still think it’s brave to go white when you have pets, and even braver when you have kids! Messes show up so easily, I don’t think I could ever go white!

I definitely need to get a washable cover for my sofa. What a great idea! I totally agree with having a designated spot on the couch for the dogs. I have a little faux fur throw that my dog loves to lie on when on the sofa. 🙂

Sharing on my Saturday post for favorite finds! We have an Australian Shepherd and a Bernese Mountain dog. Our Berner is not coordinated so every corner, requires a wide turning radius. She inevitably knocks over anything in her path (including the drywall). laura
