I’ll be the first to admit I don’t live the perfect green lifestyle, but I’m working on it! April is Earth Month, so I wanted to get a head start on sharing how we can all make small changes to transition to a green lifestyle. It’s actually easier than it sounds, especially today when there’s more green products and resources within our reach than ever.
Applying small changes to transition to a green lifestyle may feel small and simple, but in the long run they have a big impact on our Earth! I’m about to share a few small changes I’ve made to be more green, and chances are you can easily do this too, or maybe you already are!
HOW TO TRANSITION TO A GREEN LIFESTYLE:
1. Switch to eco friendly products
As I was saying above, there are more products available than ever that make it easy to transition to a green lifestyle. These range from eco-friendly cleaning products to personal care and everything in between. A simple switch to an eco-friendly brand of toothpaste or deodorant, for example, is a small change that lets you live more green daily. When it comes to eco-friendly personal care products, I really like Tom’s of Maine. Tom’s of Maine Luminous White™ toothpaste and Tom’s of Maine aluminum-free deodorant are my everyday go-tos. I like how the toothpaste is made up of biodegradable and mineral derived ingredients and has no artificial flavors, colors or preservatives. These natural products are a great alternative to using harsh chemicals on not only yourself, but also the environment.
2. Use reusable water bottles
By switching from plastic bottled water to a refillable and reusable water bottle, you can eliminate tons of waste yearly. Fun fact: one plastic bottle can take hundreds of years to decompose! I know a lot of people purchase bottled water because they prefer the quality over tap water, but you can still get the same filtered water quality by using alternative options such as filtered water pitchers and filtered faucets.
3. Sign up for electronic bill payments
Just about every company offers paperless options these days. Instead of receiving physical copies of paper bills and bank statements every month, you can opt for a paperless electronic payment option that is not only faster, in my opinion, but much more eco-friendly.
4. Use recyclable and reusable grocery bags
Grocery stores are trying to transition to a green lifestyle as well, and most now offer alternative options to plastic grocery bags. To help eliminate waste, opt for either a reusable shopping bag you can reuse visit after visit, or at least a paper bag over plastic- the paper can be recycled and is biodegradable!
5. Bike or walk instead of driving
If you have the option to do so, a great way to transition to a green lifestyle is to start biking or walking instead of using a vehicle. If you don’t have far to go, this is a great way to enjoy the outdoors and also get some cardio in while doing good for the environment!
6. Switch to energy efficient appliances
Most new appliances today come energy efficient certified, so for your big ticket items like TVs and refrigerators, chances are they’re already energy efficient. You can still make small changes around your home to be more green. One small change with big impact is changing lightbulbs. LED lightbulbs use way less energy than traditional bulbs and it’s an easy and affordable change anyone can make!
These are just a few small changes you can make to transition to a green lifestyle! If you’re looking for more ideas on ways to be more green, check this out!
