I’m a natural born brunette, but depending on the season, I often get asked if I’ve colored my hair. I usually do dye it a little darker during the fall and winter months, but I never touch it during the summer time. I personally prefer a darker shade of brown, but the warm summer months and sun have other plans. Since I’m picky on my shade of brown, I like to follow specific hair care tips for brunettes to keep it looking best.
To keep my hair looking my preferred deep shade, there are a few things I’ve been doing. First, I recently tried something new and started using the John Frieda Brilliant Brunette® Visibly Deeper™ Colour Deepening Shampoo and Conditioner that I conveniently got from Walgreens. It infuses color for a deeper shade, and saves me time between salon visits (see it in action here). It’s formulated with cocoa and evening primrose oil and is safe for use on natural or color treated hair, making it great for year round use regardless if my hair has recently been dyed or not.Along with using specific brunette hair products, these are the other precautions I take to preserve my hair color.
Hair Care Tips for Brunettes:
– Avoid harsh chemicals like chlorine. Chlorine is known for turning hair colors, regardless if you’re a blonde, brunette, or red head. It can turn your hair green, so if preserving your hair color is your priority, avoid getting your hair wet when in a swimming pool.
– Use moisturizing oils. This will keep your brunette hair looking shiny and less ashy. Oils that work well are anything naturally derived, especially from nuts. I personally love macadamia oil for this reason.
– Protect from UV sun exposure. When your hair is exposed to the sun, it can form a lighter tint, and sometimes even look highlighted. If you’re trying to avoid any natural red or blonde undertones from pulling through, don’t wear your hair down for the light to hit it. If I know I’m going to be out in the sun all day, I’ll wear my hair up with a hat for extra protection.
If you’re not a fan of wearing hats, just opt for putting your hair up. A creaseless hair tie is small enough to carry wherever you go and even a cute option you can make yourself! It’s probably the easiest DIY you’ll ever do!
DIY Creaseless Hair Ties:
To make DIY creaseless hair ties, all you need is some fold over elastic, a ruler, and a pair of scissors. I found this fold over elastic at Hobby Lobby for under $4. Most craft and fabric stores sell it, or you can even find it (probably for less) online.
First, you’ll measure and cut your fold over elastic into a 9 inch strip.
Next, take your strip of elastic and fold it over until both ends meet.
Tie the folded over ends into a knot and pull to tighten. You’ll want to make sure the knot is secure so it can hold your hair. Once it’s tightened, you’ll have about 1/4 inch of fabric as the tail of the knot.
For the final step, once you have your knot, you can either leave it as is, or cut the ends diagonally for a more polished look. See how simple that is!? The elastic is very inexpensive too, so I bet you’ll never over pay for another hair tie in the store and you’ll be making your own DIY creaseless hair ties for now on!
Also, if you’re a brunette in need of some color deepening, right now at Walgreens, the John Frieda Brilliant Brunette products are buy 1 get 1 50% off in-store and online with a Balance Rewards card until 1/30/16. They have a great selection to choose from. What are your favorite products?
