Salem, Massachusetts is one of the spookiest towns you can visit during the Halloween season. With real live witches around town and many festive things to do in Salem, you’ll be sure to get in the Halloween spirit here.
My Fall bucket list consisted of visiting Salem when I lived in New England and I’m so glad I got to go. It was hands down one of the neatest towns I’ve seen. Since this little blog didn’t exist back when I went, I figured I’d kind of recap that trip and share a few things to do in Salem if you ever get the chance to visit for Halloween! 1. Go to the Salem Witch Museum
This one’s a no brainer, you have to go! After all, Salem is where the Witch Trials took place. You can see history come to life here, including real witchcraft stories.
2. Go to the Haunted Happenings Carnival
Take a break from all the fright and enjoy a ride or two. Funnel cake for lunch isn’t a bad idea either.
3. Explore the shops in the city’s center
There are many shops to be discovered. Take a walk down Essex St. and pop in to some original Wiccan shops. You can even buy a wand and some witches brew!
4. Cheers to happy hour
Hit up happy hour at Salem Beer Works. It’s worth the walk just for the Bunker Hill Blueberry Brew. Salem Beer Works is right by the water and wharf, for all you coastal folks!
5. Take a walking ghost tour
Finish your day with a walk in the city of Salem at dusk where all the ghosts come out to play! See some of the town’s most haunted attractions and even tour haunted cemeteries. You’ll be sure to feel the paranormal presence.
6. Explore more museums
If museums are your thing, then there are a ton to visit in Salem and I definitely recommend doing a search for top tourist attractions. I’m more of a hit one tourist trap then stroll the city kind of person, so I opted for just the Salem Witch Museum, which is a definite must, but there are other things to do in Salem as well!
Have you ever been to Salem? What’s your favorite Halloween memory?

I have always wanted to visit Salem. Seems like such an interesting place, and even more perfect in the fall! We didn't have enough time when we were in Boston last week, but we'll have to put together a trip to do it. Love your list! 🙂

How is the Witch Museum for kids (ages 2-11)?

The witch museum was not what I expected. A little cheesy. You sit in the middle of a room and different scenes light up around you as they tell the story of the witch trials. I guess I was expecting more. Salem was nice though. I'm glad my daughter and I went. She's 26, but I don't think it would be bad for your younger children. It was not scary. We visited the Hocus Pocus house from the movie, the House of seven gables, a ghost tour, the cemetaries, and did the night time trolley tour. We ate at the Ugly Mug cafe and the soup restaurant next to it, as well as Longboards. The food was great. We did lots of sight seeing and the people were very friendly. Very family oriented place.
